In detail

How each part of KernelCash works.

Budgets

Budgets and buckets

Each budget is split into Income, Expense and Savings buckets, so you can see where your money is planned to go and how each bucket is tracking.

  • Income, Expense and Savings buckets
  • The next period’s budget is created from the previous one
  • Progress for every bucket at a glance

Importing

Upload a file, we handle the rest

Import the OFX or QFX files your bank already offers. KernelCash reads them in the background and creates the institution and accounts from the file.

  • OFX and QFX files supported
  • Duplicates detected by each transaction’s unique ID
  • Changed transactions are updated
  • Processed in the background, then the raw file is deleted

Transactions

Every transaction, searchable

Search your transactions, open any one for its details, or add a transaction by hand. You decide which bucket each transaction belongs to.

  • Search across your transactions
  • Details view for every transaction
  • Manual entry when you need it
  • You assign transactions to buckets yourself

Goals with rollover

Set weekly, monthly, yearly or custom goals for income, spending or savings. When a goal’s period ends, it can roll over into a new goal for the next one.

  • Goals for income, spending or savings
  • Rollover into the next period

How it works

From your bank’s website to your budget.

Every bank labels it a little differently, but the steps are the same.

  1. Get a file from your bank

Sign in to your bank’s website, open an account’s transaction history and look for a download option. Choose OFX or QFX (sometimes labeled Quicken or Microsoft Money) and a date range.

  2. Upload it to KernelCash

Drop the file into the import area. It is processed in the background, typically within a couple of minutes, and the raw file is deleted afterwards.

  3. Assign and track

New transactions appear in your list. Assign them to buckets, and your budget, analytics and goals update as you go.
